I learned from the punks that you’ve just got to turn all those feelings to songs
And I hope you sing along
To the sound of the downtrodden, heartbroken, Algrenesque loser’s blues
It’s the company I choose
And there’s none less perfect than me and all my flaws
I’m just a drunk with an aimless cause
But I’ve got a friend or two, what they wouldn’t give
To watch the majority outlive all those politicians and billionaires
They call for the rest of of us to fall on the sword for them
I stand with vandals and gamblers and addicts in search for the truth
And I know you do too
In my mind I see sex workers, anarchists, communists all band together
In spite of the wealthy few
What seems best for you is killing someone you don’t know far away
And that’s not okay
But its not your fault
That somebody’s ivory tower watches over it all with iniquitous power
We will watch it fall and crumble to our feet
Together, you and me

No Peace
04:39
|
|||
Well I headed out on the open road
Not entirely sure where I’d go
And fell into an endless pothole
And as I sank deep in the abyss
The city’s crumbling roads and bridges
Remind me just how disconnected the city is
Well I held my breath, tried not to cough
Afraid that I might kill my mom
While those in power write it off
We breathe their toxic air
And as I’m falling, falling faster now
I hear fragments of that old familiar sound
Of those who do the city’s work
While the city tries to keep their voices down
No peace
’Til no one’s sleeping in the streets
’Til no one’s falling to their knees, hands up, and begging for their lives
No more
No more history repeating
No more lying when we’re teaching a false narrative that only benefits a few
I can tell you now, it won’t benefit you
And as I sank deeper in my despair
I close my eyes, say a prayer to the God who never loved us
Our words fell upon deaf ears
On this stolen land, we walk hand in hand
Tomorrow’s promise is our demand
The experiment is over
We are scrapping the old plan
The world we want could exist
So hit the streets, raise your fist
Just watch your step, we’ll fix that bridge
When we take back our streets
No peace
’Til no one’s sleeping in the streets
’Til no one’s falling to their knees, hands up, and begging for their lives
No more
No more history repeating
Let’s tear white supremacy down from its rugged cross
And build something new
Something new

You Were the Letter
03:19
|
|||
You were the letter I wrote but never sent
You were the month that I just couldn’t pay the rent
So I took a loan out, buried my heart in interest
I just didn’t read the fine print
You were the song that I dreamt up but never wrote
A beautiful melody, it just ends on the wrong note
But if I gave it a chance
Finished what I began
And throw caution to the wind
I might find a place for it to land
I spent a lifetime waiting for the light to bend
And see it in full color right from where I stand
But I’ve been standing in the darkness
Wasting time wondering what I might find
Never searching the streets or the alleyways of your eyes
I was the lesson you heard but didn’t heed
Maybe you’re just what I need
The battle rages on inside my war torn heart
Its no fault of your own
I don’t know how to start again with patience
Wasting time wondering what I might find
Never searching the streets or the alleyways of your eyes

In His Own Image
03:57
|
|||
My God is a stranger
He has no love for me
And if this was His plan He can catch these hands
In the bar’s back alley
He shoots whiskey like a cowboy
He chases pills with wine
And He dances ‘round the graves of children
Victims of war crimes
He’s an asshole and a coward
Yet everyone I see falls to their knees and kisses His feet
While He lets them go hungry
And then Sunday morning wake up
And if you are in luck
You’ll find Him there
His hand in the air
Asking for the buck
What the fuck is this shit?
And why do we fall for it?
I’m learning how to say no
When He’s too drunk to stand up
He leans on me
We stumble out to the street
And in the gutter He throws up
A man with no home asks Him
“Sir, could you spare me anything?”
God blames him for his own misfortune
Says, “You won’t spend it wisely!”
So I drive Him to His mansion
Of gold, frankincense, and myrrh
In His pearly-gated community
Keeps Him safe from the world
The Good Word is a lie
We tell ourselves to justify awful things

Reckless Life
03:33
|
|||
I’m gonna live a reckless life
I’m gonna travel far and wide
I’m gonna drink with people that don’t speak English
And when my heart is filled with love
I’m gonna find that thing I’m most afraid of
And face it head on
And be prepared to let it go
The plans you dream to make
Were never as distant as you thought
Waiting around for the right time
Never really got you that far
The sun’s always raging in cloud littered sky
Daring the darkness to try
In the wake of all that’s happened there’s a moment
Where you take a small step back and look around
And if there’s such a thing as finding yourself
I would have found me by now
And if there’s such a thing as dying a hero
Let’s go down heroes somehow
On the one hand’s an argument for comfort
On the other’s an appeal to the sound
Of your heart beating in time with the voices
Of wonders so profound
And if there’s such a thing as dying a hero
Let’s go down heroes somehow
